  • Mamie Carthan was born on November 23, 1921 in a small town near Webb, Mississippi. She was very smart, as she was the first black student to make the honor role and the fourth black student to graduate. Her mother knew that she would have a bright future. Then she met her husband, Louis Till, who she got married with and later had a kid named Emmet Till. Emmet never met his dad because he was shipped to Europe, where he then died. When Mamie saw her sons body she was traumatized. She decieded on having an open casket funeral because she wanted everyone to know what happened to Emmet Till. And it worked, 50,000 watched his funeral. The two men were going to go on trial for murder, or at least kidnapping until they found out Louis Tills past. Where he got executed in Italy for raping two women and killing another. Because of his dads doing, they did not charge the two men for killing Emmet Till because they said that Emmets behavior ran in the family. The two men were then declared free. Mamie asked the government for help, but that did not help at all. So she started giving speeches in crowds, which caused an uproar. Letters were being sent to the white house, and Mamies speeches and story was the reason why the Civil Rights movement took off. Mamie Till died at 81 years old.
